Station / Estación # 2: Plaza Aragón

Con algo de confianza por haber finalmente empezado este proyecto me subí de nuevo al metro para tomar un paseo corto a Plaza Aragón.

Fui recibido por muchas tiendas de cadena, restaurantes de comida rápida y almacenes de muebles sobre un camino arterial.  Otra vez me pregunté qué iba a hacer.

Vi a dos caballeros imaculadamente vestidas con guitarras al frente del ‘Restaurante Tiburón‘ y imediatamente supé que eran los que estaba buscando.

Con especialización en temas romanticas, llevan años tocando juntos como dos terceres de ‘Trio Inspiración Latina’.

Les pregunté por el tercer miembro de su trio y me dijeron que llegaría ‘ahorita’ mientras hicieron gestos indicando borrachera y sueño pesado.

Caballeros mejores y más amigables no podría haber pedido conocer.

Algún día volveré a ‘Restaurante Tiburón’ para comer y escuchar su música también!

With some confidence from having finally set the wheels of the project in motion I jumped back on the metro and took a short ride down the line to Plaza Aragon.

I was greeted by chain stores galore, fast food restaurants and furniture warehouses lining an arterial road and again I wondered what I was going to do.

I spotted two immaculately attired guitar-wielding gentlemen out the front of ‘Restaurant Tiburon’ and I immediately knew they were who I was looking for.

Specialising in romantic ballads, they have been playing together for years as two thirds of ‘Trio Inspiracón Latina’.

I enquired as to the whereabouts of the third member of the group to be told that he would be arriving ‘ahorita’ (any moment) whilst gesturing to indicate heavy drinking and heavy sleeping.

Finer and friendlier gentlemen I could not have wished to meet.

One day I’ll go back to ‘Restaurant Tiburón’ to eat and listen to their music too!

Station / Estación # 1: Ciudad Azteca

First stop / Primera Parada

I spent some time thinking about how I would set out about tackling this epic project. I felt I needed to devise a system to establish the order in which I would visit stations.  I had a few different ideas but eventually decided to start on the furthest stations and gradually make my way into the centre of the city.

Studying a map of the metro system I saw that Ciudad Azteca is one of these far-flung stations and given that the Aztec people were the founders of the city, originally known as Tenochtitlan, it seemed a logical place to start.

Exiting the station I was bombarded by shopping malls.  This wasn’t the Mexico City that I was particularly intent on documenting.

Nevertheless I wandered through a couple thinking of what to do, a way in – a way to start this project.

Back outside it hit me.  In the end it was obvious I guess.

There is nothing that typifies the immediate exterior of a Mexico City Metro Station as much as the ubiquitous taco stand so I pulled up a stool, sat down to start this quest and ordered a taco.

It turned out that the taco vendor was my namesake, Pedro, and he was more than happy to talk.

As he held up a nopal he recounted the story of the eagle sitting upon a nopal cactus with a snake in its mouth.  It was this sight that prompted the Aztec (or Mexica) people to construct the ancient city Tenochtitlán on the site where modern day Mexico City now stands.

Thanks Pedro!  I think I started in the right place!

Pasé tiempo pensando cómo empezaría a enfrentar este proyecto epico.  Sentí que necesitaba diseñar un sistema para establecer un orden en que visitaría las estaciones.  Tuve algunas ideas diferentes pero al fin decidi empezar por las estaciones mas lejanas y gradualmente venir a las por el centro de la ciudad.

Al estudiar un mapa del sistema del metro vi que Ciudad Azteca es una de esas estaciones más lejanas y teniendo en cuenta que la gente azteca fundó la ciudad, conocida originalmente como Tenochtitlan, pareció un lugar lógico para empezar.

Al salir del metro me bombardearon los centros comerciales.  No era la Ciudad de México que tenia muchas las ganas de documentar.

No obstante caminé por un par de ellos pensando de qué hacer- una manera de empezar este proyecto.

Afuera de nuevo me di cuenta.  Al fin supongo que fue obvio.

No hay otra cosa que representa el exterior inmediato de una estación del metro de la ciudad de México tanto como los ubicuos puestos de tacos asi que me agarré un taburete, me senté y pedí un taco.

Resultó que el taquero compartía mi nombre, Pedro, y estaba más que contento hablar.

Mientras sostenía un nopal me contó la historia del águila sentada sobre un nopal con un serpiente en la boca.  Fue esta visión que impulsó a la gente azteca (o mizteca) a construir la ciudad antigua de Tenochtitlán que se ubicaba donde ahora se encuentra la ciudad moderna de México.

Mexico City Metro Project

In late 2011 I got the idea that it would be an interesting challenge and above all an unforgettable experience to traverse the entire, extensive metro system of Mexico City.

Beginning in early 2012 the idea will come to fruition.

However, it is not just a matter of riding the metro to each station.  I will get off at every single stop on each line and explore the surrounds of the station.

The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding and knowledge of Mexico City and Mexico by experiencing the city at close range and documenting my findings with both written and photographic content.

With approximately 180 stations across the network this will be a huge endeavour.

The life and culture within the metro itself is also well worth documenting.  With between 4 and 5 million daily passengers the diversity of people on the metro system is incredible.  I have encountered very few places in the world that are as lively as the Mexico City Metro.  While photography within the trains and stations is prohibited I am sure that the vibrant life contained within will also be reflected.

Mexico City Metro

A los finales de 2011 me occurió la idea que sería un reto interesante y sobre todo una experiencia inolvidable  cruzar el sistema extensa entera de la ciudad de México.

Empezando a los principios de 2012 la idea se fructificará.

Sin embargo, no solamente se trata de viajar a cada estación.  Me bajaré en cada parada de cada linea para explorar los alrededores de cada estación.

El proposito del proyecto es conseguir mejor comprensión y conocimiento de la ciudad de México y de México a través de experimentar la ciudad de muy cerca y documentar lo que encuentro con contento escrito y fotografico.

Con aproximadamente 180 estaciones en la red será un gran esfuerzo.

La vida y cultura dentro del metro también vale mucho la pena documentar.

Con 4 a 5 millones de pasajeros diarios la diversidad de gente en el metro es increible.  He visto muy pocos lugares que tienen tanta vida y energia como el metro de la ciudad de México.  Aunque la fotografía en los trenes y estaciones esta prohibido estoy seguro que la vida vibrante contenida dentro también se verá reflejada.

Tengo muchas ganas de empezar la aventura.  Espero que disfruten el paseo!
