Station / Estación # 18: Escuadron 201

Esta estación se nombra por el escuadrón 201 de la fuerza aérea mexicana que participó en la segunda guerra mudial por el lado aliado.

Los dias Sábado y Domingo muchas de las calles alrededor de la estación se convierten en un gran tianguis.

La abundancia de colores brillantes por todo el mercado es excepcional.  Desde máscaras de lucha libre a escobas de varios colores, zapatos y playeras brillantes, marcadores gigantes y cartas de colección hasta pollitos recién nacidos con plumas teñidas.  Es todo un torrente caleidoscópico de color.

Dentro de todo eso también saque foto de una canasta llena de chapulines, una cigarrera bien chida y unas banderillas en etapa de freír y por supuesto la casi obligatoria colección de arte callejero.

This station is named after the Mexican Airforce ‘Escuadrón 201‘ that participated in World War II on the side of the allies.

On Saturdays and Sundays many of the streets around the station host a vast open air market known as ‘Tianguis‘.

The abundance of vibrant colours through the market is remarkable.  From lucha libre masks to multi-coloured brooms, bright shoes and t-shirts, giant coloured markers and collecting cards right up to newly-hatched chicks with brightly-dyed fluff.  It’s a kaleidoscopic swirl of colour.

In amongst all that I also snapped a basket full of ‘chapulines‘ (edible grasshoppers), a nifty cigarette holder and some battered savs (pluto pups, dagwood dogs, what Americans apparently call a corn dog) frying away and of course the almost mandatory collection of street art.

Station / Estación # 17: Talisman

So, Talisman, what luck will you bring me?

‘I grant thee with a hexagonally-partioned metallic view of the wheels of Mexican industry in motion.’

‘I present thee with two antique cars in states of disrepair.’

‘However, my greatest gift to you is a landscape full of all the fun of the town fair, albeit in a state of dormancy.  You are one day early.’

‘Enjoy the colourfulness of the rides, speak with the carnival folk, observe the prize toys and revel in the tranquility for tomorrow this place will be transfigured.’

‘And what would all this merry frolicking be without an ice cream to soothe your palate?’

‘Go forth and enjoy.  I have thrown in some more street art for good measure as well.’

Así que, Talisman, qué suerte me traerá?

‘Le concedo una vista metalica dividida hexagonamente de las ruedas de la industria mexicana en movimiento.’

‘Le presento con dos coches antiguos en estado de abandono.’

‘Sin embargo, mi regalo mayor para usted es un paisaje lleno de toda la diversión de la fería aunque en un estado de quietud.  Llegó un día temprano.’

‘Disfrute todo su color, hable con la gente de la fería, observe las juguetes y aproveche de la tranquilidad porque mañana este lugar será transfigurado.’

‘Y qué sería toda esta diversión sin un heladito para aliviar su paladar?’

‘Salga a disfrutar.  También le he añadido un poco más de arte callejero.’
