Station / Estación # 148: Insurgentes Sur [Project Resumption]

I’ve been back in Mexico City a few days.  It has seemed a bit strange at times,walking around the streets of the ‘centro histórico’ where I used to live, visiting old haunts – everything familiar but with subtle changes, in my perspective also.  The faces of the taqueros (taco vendors) and viene-vienes (unofficial parking assistants/car minders) I recognise have slightly aged, another wrinkle, and of course, so has mine.

Travelling around the city I’ve already got on and off at quite a few metro stations and my past visits to them for this project have inevitably come to mind.  The visits all occurred between one and a half to two years ago, looking back it all seems like a dream.  I have had to revisit the blog posts to refresh my memory on more than one occasion.

Now, around a year and a half since I visited Zocalo station to complete this project, the newest line of the system – Line 12 (The Golden Line or Bicentennial Line) is in full operational mode.  So to update my blog, beyond the familiarisation ride I took back in 2012, I decided to jump on line 12 and jump off at Insurgentes Sur station, the penultimate station on the line in the westerly direction.

I found an affluent part of town.  It was around lunchtime and plenty of office workers were strolling the streets and a leafy plaza.  Squirrels darted here and there.  I came across a kindergarten named after the Republic of Hungary which is somewhat intriguing and got me thinking about Hungary-Mexico reations. Wikipedia tells me that paprika, a key ingredient in Hungarian goulash, originated in Mexico.  Frida Kahlo’s father apparently was of Hungarian descent.  The rationale behind the name of the kindergarten, however, I do not know.  Is that the name of the street it is situated on?  Perhaps. Probably.  I should have checked.  I didn’t.  I’m not sure.

Anyway, I was happy to be back on the streets of Mexico City with all their intrigues and intricacies.  There are 20 stations on line 12, 4 of them intersect with other lines though so that leaves me with 16 stations to visit.  I hope you’ll jump on the virtual carriage for the trip down one of the world’s newest subway lines.  Greetings from Mexico City.

Llevo unos días de vuelta en Ciudad de México. En algunos momentos me ha parecido un poco extraño, caminando por las calles del centro histórico donde solía vivir, visitando lugares predilectos – todo familiar pero con cambios sutiles, en mi perspectiva también.  Las caras de los taqueros y viene-vienes que reconozco han envejecido, una arruga más, y por supuesto, me ha pasado lo mismo.

Viajando por la ciudad, ya me he bajado y subido en varias estaciones de metro y las visitas del pasado que hice para este proyecto inevitablemente me han llegado a mente.  Todas las visitas ocurrieron entre hace un año y medio y dos años, recordando todo parece como un sueño.  He tenido que visitar las entradas de este blog para refrescar la memoria en más de una ocasión.

Ahora, alrededor de un año y medio desde que visité la estación Zocalo para terminar este proyecto, la linea más nueva del sistema – Linea 12 (la Linea Dorada o Linea Bicentenario) está en pleno modo de operación.  Por lo tanto, para actualizar mi blog, más allá del recorrido de familiarización que tomé en 2012, decidí subirme a la linea 12 y bajarme en la estación de Insurgentes Sur, la penúltima estación de la linea en la dirección hacia el oeste de la ciudad.

Encontré una parte pudiente de la ciudad.  Fue alrededor de la hora de comer y varios trabajadores de oficina caminaban por las calles y una plaza frondosa.  Ardillas movían como flechas. Llegué a un jardín infantil que toma su nombre de la República de Hungría que es algo intrigante y me hizo pensar sobre las relaciones entre Hungría y México.  Wikipedia me dice que pimentón, una ingrediente clave en gulash húngaro se originó en México.  El padre de Frida Kahlo aparentemente fue de descendencia húngaro. La razón atrás del nombre del jardín infantil, sin embargo, no lo sé.  ¿También se llama así la calle donde está ubicado?  Tal vez.  Probablemente.  Debería haber verificado.  No lo hice.  No sé.

De todos casos, me alegró estar nuevamente en las calles de la Ciudad de México con todos sus intrigas y entresijos.  Hay 20 estaciones en linea 12, 4 de ellas cruzan con otras lineas así que tengo 16 estaciones para visitar.  Espero que subirás a este vagón virtual para tomar el viaje por una de las lineas del metro más nuevas del mundo.  Saludos desde México DF.
