Just over a year on from the start and six months since its completion the MCM project has reached 100,000 views today!
¡Un poco más de un año desde el comienzo y seis meses después de su finalización el MCM Project hoy ha alcanzado a 100,000 mil vistas!
100,000 views does not equate to 100,000 visitors. Each click to enlarge a photo, for example, counts as a view. Nevertheless, it is still a nice milestone to reach.
100,000 vistas no es igual a 100,000 visitantes. Cada click para ampliar una foto, por ejemplo, cuenta como una vista. No obstante, estoy contento.
These days most visitors to the page are coming via web searches. They arrive in search of a range of different things. Whether they find what they are looking for I don’t know. They’re coming from all over the world. Until now there have been visitors from 94 countries representing all of the world’s continents bar Antarctica. However, around two thirds come from Mexico and the United States.
Ahora la mayoria de visitantes a la pagina viene a través de busquedas de web. Llegan en busca de una variedad de cosas diferentes. Si encuentran lo qué estan buscando no lo sé. Vienen de todo el mundo. Hasta ahora han habido visitantes de 94 países representando todo los continentes del mundo aparte de la Antártida. Sin embargo alrededor de dos tercios vienen de México y los Estados Unidos.
Following, in question and answer format, I’ll aim to explain some more about the project.

WHAT IS/WAS THE MEXICO CITY METRO PROJECT?
¿QUÉ ES/FUE EL MEXICO CITY METRO PROJECT?
Over the first seven months of 2012 I visited the surrounds of every station of the Mexico City Metro network. In each visit to each station I wandered the streets with no preconceived plans or ideas taking photos of anything and everything that caught my attention. After each visit I uploaded all the photos and wrote about my experience of the station visit. That was the MCM Project. Now the MCM Project is this website.
Durante los primeros siete meses de 2012 visité los alrededores de cada estación del sistema del metro de la Ciudad de México. En cada visita a cada estación caminé en las calles sin planes o ideas preconcebidos tomando fotos de cualquier cosa que me llamó la atención. Después de cada visita subi las fotos y escribi sobre mi experiencia de la visita a la estación. Eso fue el MCM Project. Ahora el MCM Project es este sitio web.
WHY?
¿POR QUÉ?
In my childhood I learned that Mexico City was the most populous city in the world. I had long been interested in the city and conceived the idea for this project as a way of ‘seeing’ more of the city. I hoped to learn not only about the megalopolis but also about the Mexican people, culture, history and psyche. Documenting my findings with written and photographic impressions was a way of sharing the journey with others.
En mi niñez aprendi que la Ciudad de México era la ciudad más populosa del mundo. Por mucho tiempo había estado interesado en la ciudad y concebi la idea para este proyecto comu una manera de ‘ver’ más de la ciudad. Esperaba aprender no solamente sobre la megalópolis pero también sobre la gente mexican, cultura, historia y psique. Documentar mis descubrimientos con impresiones escritas y fotográficas fue una manera de compartir el viaje con otras.
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PHOTOGRAPHS?
¿POR QUÉ HAY TANTAS FOTOGRAFÍAS?
Every photo I took I uploaded to the page. I did this partly because I wanted to document each station thoroughly but also to save time. I simply uploaded all photos without discrimination and without editing. I see the large quantity of photos as a positive and a negative. Apart from the photos for the final five stations the photos were taken with a small point and shoot camera. There are many poor and poor quality photos. I think there are some good ones as well.
Cada foto que tomé subi a la pagina. Lo hice así en parte porque quise documentar cada estación en la manera más completa que pude pero también lo hice para ahorrar tiempo. Simplemente subi las fotos sin discriminación y sin editar. Veo la gran cantidad de fotos como un positivo y un negativo. Aparte de las fotos de las últimas cinco estaciones tomé las fotos con una cámara compacta y sencilla. Hay muchas fotos malas y de mala calidad. Creo que hay algunas buenas también.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE PROJECT?
¿QUÉ FUE LO MEJOR DEL PROYECTO?
Without a doubt the best aspect of the project was interacting with the people of Mexico City. I met people from many different walks of life. I found the vast majority of people to be friendly, open and curious.
Sin duda el mejor aspecto del proyecto fue interrelacionar con la gente de la Ciudad de México. Conoci personas de Conocí a gente de muchas diferentes ámbitos de la vida. Encontré la gran mayoría de la gente amigable, abierta y curiosa.
ANY DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS?
¿ALGUN ENCUENTRO PELIGROSO?
Mexico and Mexico City obviously have a reputation for violence and danger. Mexico wide homicide statistics are shockingly high. Crime in Mexico City is also, statistically and aneccdotally, relatively common although there have been significantly less drug-related killings than other parts of Mexico. In any case in all my wanderings I was not a victim of nor witness to any crime. The worst I saw were a couple of drunken fistfights. I never felt threatened or unsafe in any way. I was repeatedly warned to be careful in the vicinity of certain stations, especially Tepito. My visit there was great and turned out to be my most viewed post with over 2000 views. See it here.
México y la Ciudad de México obviamente tiene una reputación por violencia y peligro. Estadistics de homocidio son muy altas. Crimen en la Ciudad de México, estadisticamente y anecdoticamente, es también relativamente común aunque han habido significantemente menos asesinatos relacionados a las drogas que otras parted de México. En todos casos en todas mis vueltas nunca fui victima ni testigo de crimen. Lo peor que vi fueron un par de peleas borrachas a puñetazos. Nunca senti amenezado ni inseguro. Me advertieron varias veces a tener cuidado en las cercanías de ciertas estaciones, especialmente Tepito. Mi visita ahi fue muy buena y resultó ser mi entrada más vista. Veela aqui.
WHAT ABOUT LINE 12?
¿Y LA LINEA 12?
Line 12, the Golden Line, is now open. While I lived in Mexico City it was not. For quite a while there was not much certainty about when it would open. What to do with regard to this situation was an ongoing quandary. In the end I managed to ride the line from end to end on a familiarization ride. Read about it here. Future inclusion of line 12 in the MCM Project is a pending possibility.
La linea 12, la linea dorada, ahora está abierta. Mientras yo vivi en la Ciudad de México no estaba abierta. Por un buen periodo de tiempo no habia mucho certidumbre sobre la fecha en que abriría. Al fin pude viajar en la linea desde un fin al otro en un recorrido de familiarizacón. Lee sobre esta experiencia aqui. La inclusión futura de la linea 12 en el MCM Project es una posibilidad pendiente.
