CCTV Report: Mexico City Metro Fare Increase

Here is the third and final clip from the recent series CCTV did about the Mexico City Metro.  This one deals with the fair increase which came into effect late last year.  The 2 peso (15c) increase, elevating the cost of a ride on the system to 5 pesos, doesn’t seem like much but when considered as a percentage increase (66%) it is a steep rise.

Metro authorities surveyed passengers prior to the fare increase, asking whether they would be prepared to pay more if it resulted in a more efficient metro system and better service.  The survey results, with a majority responding ‘yes’ were used as a justification for the rise.  Many believe the results were doctored.

The video explores the daily reality of millions of Mexico City residents who work in low-paying jobs or in the informal sector, for whom the price increase is most sharply felt.  Unsurprisingly a protest movement emerged and for a few days, but especially on the day the higher fare came into effect, protestors jumped the turnstiles.  A social media campaign gathered under the title #posmesalto which means, I’ll just jump.  The facebook page has almost 150,000 likes.

Aquí está el tercer y final video de la serie recién sobre el metro de la Ciudad de México, producido por la canal CCTV.  Este video se trata de la subida del precio de boleto que tomó efecto al fin del año pasado.  El aumento de 2 pesos, subiendo el precio de un boleto a  pesos, no parece mucho pero cuando se considera como un aumento de porcentaje (66%) sí es un aumento grande.

Las autoridades de metro encuestaron pasajeros antes de la subida de precio, preguntando si estarían dispuestos a pagar más si resultara en un sistema de metro más eficiente y con mejor servicio.  Los resultados de la encuesta, con una mayoría respondiendo que sí, fueron usados para justificar el aumento.  Muchos creen que los resultados fueron falsificados.

El video explora la realidad diaria de millones de residentes de la Ciudad de México quienes trabajan en empleos con salarios muy bajos o en la economia informal.  Para estas personas la subida del precio de metro les puede afectar mucho.  Un movimiento de protesta surgió y por unos días, pero especialmente en el día que empezó la tarifa elevada, protestantes brincaron los torniquetes.  Se armó una campaña de las redes sociales bajo el titulo #posmesalto.  La pagina de facebook tiene casi 150,000 fans.

CCTV Report: Hawkers in the Mexico City Metro

Here is another video from the series CCTV did about the Mexico City Metro.  While you might not immediately notice, or notice at all, prostitution in the metro (as shown in the previous clip I posted) the same cannot be said for the ubiquitous hawkers peddling anything and everything; chewing gum, CDs, nail clippers, spelling books, chocolate and a whole lot more.

If you ride the metro more than a few times, the cry of ‘a 10, a 10, a 10 , a 10, a 10, a 10, a 10!…10 pesos te vale, 10 pesos te cuesta‘ will soon become permanently etched on your brain.

However, there is no doubt that there are less roaming vendors as when I initially completed this project in 2012.  On line 12 there are none at all.  That can be attributed to  a campaign that is in motion to rid the trains of  hawkers.  Metro authorities are running an anti-hawkers publicity campaign (If you don’t buy from them, they will disappear) and police are cracking down.  Personally I think it would be sad to see them go, a certain vibrancy would be lost so I say, keep on buying!  The video below deals with these issues and more.

 

Aquí está otro video de la serie que hizo CCTV sobre el metro de la Ciudad de México.  Es posible que no percibes inmediatamente, o percibir en absoluto, prostitución en el metro (presentado en el video que previamente publique)pero  no se puede decir lo mismo por los vendedores ambulantes (vagoneros) que se ven mucho en los trenes del metro.  Venden varias cosas; chicle, discos de música, cortaúñas, libros de ortografía, y mucho más. 

Si vas en el metro más que un par de veces, el grito de ‘ a 10, a 10, a10, a10, a10, a10, a10!…..10 pesos te vale, 10 pesos te cuesta” seguramente  te quedará permanentemente grabada en la memoria.’

Sin embargo, no hay duda que hay menos vagoneros que cuando inicialmente terminé este proyecto en 2012.  En la linea 12 no hay en absoluto.  Se puede atribuir esto a una campaña que está en moción para librar los trenes de los vendedores ambulantes.  Las autoridades del metro están ejecutando una campaña de publicidad contra los vagoneros (si no les compras, desaparecen) y la policía está vigilando con más fuerza.  Personalmente, creo que sería triste que desaparecieran, se perdería cierta vitalidad así que yo digo, sigue comprando!  El video abajo presenta estas temas y más.

 

Mexico City Metro Project

In late 2011 I got the idea that it would be an interesting challenge and above all an unforgettable experience to traverse the entire, extensive metro system of Mexico City.

Beginning in early 2012 the idea will come to fruition.

However, it is not just a matter of riding the metro to each station.  I will get off at every single stop on each line and explore the surrounds of the station.

The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding and knowledge of Mexico City and Mexico by experiencing the city at close range and documenting my findings with both written and photographic content.

With approximately 180 stations across the network this will be a huge endeavour.

The life and culture within the metro itself is also well worth documenting.  With between 4 and 5 million daily passengers the diversity of people on the metro system is incredible.  I have encountered very few places in the world that are as lively as the Mexico City Metro.  While photography within the trains and stations is prohibited I am sure that the vibrant life contained within will also be reflected.

Mexico City Metro

A los finales de 2011 me occurió la idea que sería un reto interesante y sobre todo una experiencia inolvidable  cruzar el sistema extensa entera de la ciudad de México.

Empezando a los principios de 2012 la idea se fructificará.

Sin embargo, no solamente se trata de viajar a cada estación.  Me bajaré en cada parada de cada linea para explorar los alrededores de cada estación.

El proposito del proyecto es conseguir mejor comprensión y conocimiento de la ciudad de México y de México a través de experimentar la ciudad de muy cerca y documentar lo que encuentro con contento escrito y fotografico.

Con aproximadamente 180 estaciones en la red será un gran esfuerzo.

La vida y cultura dentro del metro también vale mucho la pena documentar.

Con 4 a 5 millones de pasajeros diarios la diversidad de gente en el metro es increible.  He visto muy pocos lugares que tienen tanta vida y energia como el metro de la ciudad de México.  Aunque la fotografía en los trenes y estaciones esta prohibido estoy seguro que la vida vibrante contenida dentro también se verá reflejada.

Tengo muchas ganas de empezar la aventura.  Espero que disfruten el paseo!
