Station / Estación # 147: Zocalo [FINAL STATION – END OF PROJECT]

After six months and a smidgen to boot, the rolling, engaged motion of the virtual carriages of the Mexico City Metro Project comes to a final halt.

146 prior stops provided enormous scope for urban wander, yielding tremendous urban wonder (within the ordinary as well) and that, of course, has been the narrative and pictorial journey of this project.

Each of those stations, one by one played their part and now, collectively, deliver me here, to the ultimate destination:- Zocalo.

The end of projectile trajectory, however, provides a concluding conundrum.  The surrounds of this station are pregnant with possibility, dense with opportunity, thick with potential.

Exploring the myriad nooks and crannies of the surrounds of the Zocalo could be an immense project in itself.

Certainly, and as ever, not an exhaustive account, I hope that this entry gives you some sense of the space.

So, what to include and where to start?

Después de seis meses, y un poquito más, el movimiento de los carros virtuales del Mexico City Metro Project llega a su última parada.

146 estaciones proporcionaron mucha posibilidad de vago urbano y con esta, vino una cantidad tremenda de asombro urbano (dentro de lo ordinario también) y eso, por supuesto, ha sido el foco narrativo y gráfico de este proyecto.

Cada una de aquellas estaciones, una por una contribuyeron, y ahora, colectivamente, me llevan aqui, al último destino;- Zocalo.

El fin de la trayectoria del proyecto, sin embargo, trae un problema final.  Los alrededores de la estación estan embrazadas con posibilidad, densas con oportunidad, gruesas con potencial.

Explorando cada rinconcito de las cercanías del Zocalo podría ser un proyecto inmenso aparte.

Indudadablemente y como siempre, esta entrada no es exhaustiva, pero espero que te da algo de una sensación de este espacio.

Así, qué incluir y dónde empezar?

PART I:  EL ZOCALO (Itself)

After all due consideration, the starting point, of course, has to be here, the namesake of the station and the dominant feature of the area.  Officially ‘Plaza de la Constitución’ (Constitution Square) but known to all and sundry as ‘el zocalo’.

El Zocalo ranks amongst the largest public squares in the world.

Pondering an apt way to describe this vast space, two metaphors lodged in my mind.

To me, el zocalo is the great blank canvas and ultimate chameleon of Mexico City.

I’ll explain.  In crude terms el zocalo is an immense concrete expanse.

However, the broad and intricate and varied  brush strokes of collective humanity paint life.

El Zocalo is a vast space for expression; cultural, political, artistic and much, much more – imaginative zeal unleashed, possibilities endless.  El Zocalo – the great blank canvas.

Thus, el Zocalo is the unbiased host of myriad events, demonstrations, festivals, exhibitions, concerts and also gleeful spontaneity.  The focal point of the city with a constantly changing face.  El Zocalo – the ultimate chameleon.

And high above, a colossal flag of this nation ripples, unfurls in zephyrs, drapes in times of breathless stillness.

One could also say, ‘this is el corazón de México’ (the heart of Mexico)

PARTE I:  EL ZOCALO

Después de la consideración necesaria, el punto de partida, por supuesto, tiene que estar aqu, el tocayo de la estación, y el lugar dominante de la zona.  Oficialmente ‘Plaza de la Constitución’ pero mejor conocida a todos como ‘el Zocalo’.

El Zocalo es una de las plazas más amplias del mundo.

Pensando de una manera apta para describirlo este espacio enorme, dos metáforas se alojaron en mi mente.

Para mí, el zocalo es el gran lienzo en blanco y el camaleón perfecto de la Ciudad de México.

Explicaré.  En palabras burdas, el Zocalo es una extensión inmensa de concreto.

Sin embargo, las pinceladas anchas y intrincadas y variadas de humanidad colectiva pintan vida.

El Zocalo es un espacio inmenso por expresión; cultural, política, artística y mucho, mucho más, fervor imaginativo desencadenado, posibilidades interminables.  El Zocalo – el gran lienzo en blanco.

Así, el Zocalo es el anfitrión imparcial de un sinnúmero de eventos, manifestaciones, festivales, exposiciones, conciertos y también espontaneidad regocijada.  El foco de atención de la ciudad con una cara que constantemente está cambiando.  El Zocalo – El camaleón perfecto. 

Y alto arriba, una bandera colosal de esta nación ondula, desplega en céfiros, cae en tiempos de calma sin aliento.

También se puede decir, ‘este es el corazón de México’

PART II:  STREET ART

A ubiquitous constant across Mexico City and a ceaseless source of vibrancy.  Here, the less words, the better.  From the northern fringes of el Zocalo.

PARTE II:  ARTE CALLEJERO

Una constante ubicua a través de la Ciudad de México y una fuente incesante de viveza.  Aqui, con menos palabras es mejor.  Desde las orillas norteñas del Zocalo.

PART III:  THE CATHEDRAL

Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest in the Americas, stands large and peers down over the Zocalo.  In the surrounding streets , as across the city, signs of Mexico’s deep Catholic heritage are revealed.  Around el zocalo; strolling nuns and street side shrines.

PARTE III:  LA CATEDRAL

La Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de México, la más grande de las américas, esta situada a un lado del zocalo, mirando con esfuerzo hacia abajo.  En las calles cercanas, como en todas partes de la ciudad, indicios del profundo patrimonio católico de México se revelan.  Alrededor del zocalo; monjas caminando y santuarios de la calle.   

PART IV:  CACTI

Fair play to include a few of the nearby cacti, right?  Although my genus classification skills are non existent, I certainly appreciate the aesthetics.  I’ll seek to remedy the former.

PART IV:  CACTUSES

¿Es justo incluir unos pocos de los cactuses cercanos, no?  Aunque, mis habilidades de clasificar los géneros son no-existentes, por cierto me agradece su valor estética.  Intentaré remediar el primero.

PART V:  THE NATIONAL PALACE

Stretching across the eastern perimeter of el Zocalo is the elongated facade of the National Palace.  Access to the hallowed interiors of the inner sanctum reveals magnificent Diego Rivera murals, museums, immaculately manicured grounds, sleek courtyards and sculptures, bubbling fountains and marching battalions.

PARTE V:  EL PALACIO NACIONAL

 Extendiendo por todo el perímetro este del zocalo está la fachada alargada del Palacio Nacional.  Aceso a los interiores venerados revela murales magníficos de Diego Rivera, museos, jardines imaculadamente cuidados, patios y esculturas bellos, fuentes burbujeando y batallones en marcha.

PART VI:  EL GRAN HOTEL LOBBY

It’s worth popping into this nearby opulent hotel just to gaze up at the ceiling.

Vale la pena entrar un ratito a este hotel opulento cercano solo para admirar el techo.

PART VII:  NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CULTURES

In this city, staying away from museums can take some effort.  Apparently there are more museums in Mexico City than in any other city of the world.  This museum takes you on a journey around the world, a metaphor for diversity.  When I visited, a temporary exhibition featured the Maori culture of New Zealand.

PARTE VII:  MUSEO NACIONAL DE CULTURAS

En esta ciudad, quedarse lejos de museos puede requerer algo de esfuerzo.  Aparentemente la Ciudad de México tiene más museos que cualquier otra ciudad del mundo.  Este museo te lleva de viaje alrededor del mundo, una metafora por diversidad.  Cuando visité, había una exposición temporal de la cultura Maori de Nueva Zelanda.

PART VIII:  PLAZA SANTO DOMINGO

Not too far away from the station lies another largish square, Plaza Santo Domingo.

No muy lejos de la estación está la plaza Santo Domingo.

PART IX:  POLITICS

As I alluded to earlier, el Zocalo is a central focus point of political gathering and rally.  With the Mexican presidential election held at the start of this month it has received a considerable recent workout.  In the current political climate, likelihood of abatement appears negligibly minimal.

PARTE IX:  POLÍTICA

Como aludi anteriormente, el Zocalo es un foco de atención de la manifestación política.  Con la elección presidencial realizada a los principios de este mes, últimamente ha recibido muchísimos manifestantes.  Con la situación política actual, la posibilidad de disminución aparece minima.

PART X:  TEMPLO MAYOR

Now an urban archaeological site, Templo Mayor was an important temple site for the Aztec people in the ancient capital Tenochtitlan.  Rebuilt several times, covered over by the Spaniards and later excavated.  Close your eyes and imagine how it once was.

Ahora un sitio arqueologico urbano, Templo Mayor era un sitio de templos importante por la gente Azteca en la capital antigua Tenochtitlan.  Reconstruido varias veces, cubierto por los españoles y luego excavado.  Cerrate los ojos para imaginar como solía ser.

PART XI:  RITUAL DANCE AND SMOKE CLEANSING

I don’t know a lot about this but it is a constant feature of el Zocalo precinct.  I can testify it is all quite a spectacle.

No sé mucho sobre estas costumbres pero se destacan constantemente en la zona del Zocalo.  Puedo testificar que es todo un espectaculo bastante interesante.

PART XII:  FURTHER STREET SCENES

So much, too much, going on around Metro Station Zocalo.  Sensory overload, a lot to take in.  Numerous visits advised!

Tanto, demasiado, ocurriendo alrededor de la estación del Metro Zocalo.  Sobrecarga sensorial.  ¡Varias visitas aconsejadas!

All over this city, meeting the friendly folk of el DF was a (the) highlight of the project.  Here is yet another eclectic crew.

Por todos lados de esta ciudad, conocer a la gente amable del DF fue lo mejor de este proyecto.  Aqui hay otro grupo ecléctico.

THE END (FOR NOW)

Well, that’s it.  The end of the road (or the tracks) and wanderings.  So far as this, the MCM Project, goes anyhow (for now at least).  I plan to reflect upon this whole experience and write something to put on this site.  For that reason I will keep it short now (plus it’s half past two,3 now I do edit!, in the morning).  That might be in a month or so or maybe two.  Thanks to everyone that has followed the station visits, it has been great to have visitors to the page from far and wide and, of course, near.  I have a few different projects and ideas in varying stages of progress or gestation so I hope to tell you about them at some stage, maybe when I write my reflections on all this.  Maybe you might be interested.  And then there is the whole line 12 scenario.  The line will eventually open and render this project incomplete.  Oh, the shame!  So, who knows, maybe I will virtually reappear in MCM Project guise once again.  Let’s see.  For now, however, all the best everyone, hope you have enjoyed, regards.

EL FIN (POR AHORA)

Bueno, eso es todo.  El fin del camino (o mejor dicho las vias del metro) y las vagos de esta ciudad.  Por este proyecto, por lo menos (por ahora).  Planeo reflexionar sobre la experiencia en total y escribir algo para subir a este sitio.  Por aquel razón ahora seré breve (mas son las dos y media de la mañana, ahora 3!).  Puede que esta será en un mes o tal vez dos.  Gracias a todos que han seguido las visitas de las estaciones, ha sido muy bueno tener visitas de lugares lejos, anchos y, por supuesto, cerca.  Tengo unos proyectos y ideas diferentes en etapas variables de progreso o gestación así que espero contarte sobre ellos, tal vez cuando escribo mis reflexiones de todo esto.  Puede que te interesa.  Entonces hay toda esta situación de la linea 12 que finalmente abrirá y causar que este proyecto sea incompleto.  Ah, qué verguenza!  Por lo tanto, quién sabe, tal vez reapareceré virtualmente una vez más bajo la bandera del MCM Project.  Veamos.  A tú, un lector en español, por favor perdone mis muchisimos errores de cada aspecto del idioma, espero haber mejorado!  Por ahora, te deseo todo lo mejor, espero que hayas disfrutado, saludos.
